Cylindrical Cell Sorting
Application Case

11 channel OCV and ACIR screening for 18650 and 21700 battery pack assembly

For a battery pack manufacturer, cell sorting must fit the way production actually runs: controlled batches, approved acceptance windows and clear release decisions. This COENG application scenario shows how an 11-channel cylindrical cell sorting machine can become a defined quality gate between incoming inspection and pack assembly.

Customer profile Illustrative project context
Location and business Vietnam; an established, privately owned battery pack OEM and cylindrical cell importer.
Products and buyers 18650 and 21700 packs for light electric mobility and portable industrial equipment; supplied to equipment brands and regional distributors.
Buying team Operations manager, production engineer, quality supervisor and procurement lead.
Project scope Upgrade an existing pack assembly line with a dedicated OCV and ACIR sorting station, operator procedures and batch release controls.

From incoming cells to controlled batch release

The production challenge

In this scenario, operators previously measured incoming cells at separate workstations and transferred results into batch sheets. Multiple cell models and changing order sizes made setup consistency and bin identification difficult to maintain across shifts. The project therefore focused on repeatable screening and an auditable handover to assembly, alongside the required processing rate.

The COENG equipment configuration

The selected platform provides 11 receiving channels and sorts cylindrical cells by open circuit voltage and AC internal resistance. Its published production rating is 4,800 cells per hour. The configuration includes PC data recording and USB data storage; barcode scanning and database integration are optional. The project uses 18650 and 21700 cells in separate production runs, with the applicable tooling and setup confirmed for each format.

The 4,800 cells per hour figure is a catalog rating, not a measured customer result. Sustained output must be validated with the intended cells, feeding method and collection routine.

Implementation and acceptance

1 Define the process. Production engineering identifies the cell models, pack requirements and target output. Quality approves model-specific OCV and ACIR windows, inspection conditions and the disposition of out-of-window cells. Different formats, chemistries and incoming lots remain segregated.

2 Qualify the setup. The acceptance plan checks measurement consistency, routing to the assigned channels, alarms, data export and performance over a representative run. Boundary samples are included to verify how the system handles cells close to acceptance limits.

3 Commission the workstation. Site acceptance repeats the agreed checks with the intended utilities, operators and downstream handling. The handover package covers setup instructions, bin identification, daily checks, maintenance tasks and operator training.

4 Release the routine process. In the completed scenario, quality signs off the approved recipes and batch release procedure. Operators verify setup at shift start and after changeovers, keep output trays identified and hold any questionable material for review.

What makes the application distinct

The value lies in the connection between testing and production decisions. Each run follows an approved setup; sorted trays retain their incoming-lot identity; and batch records support release to assembly. Basic traceability uses the machine records and the factory batch traveler. Cell-level barcode traceability and a plant database connection require the corresponding optional scope and validation.

At the mature operating stage shown here, recipe approval, changeover checks, alarm response and maintenance ownership are part of daily work. These controls support a repeatable production process. OCV and ACIR sorting do not establish cell capacity or cycle life; the pack quality plan retains any required capacity, safety and final-pack tests.
