KISUMU – At the edge of Lake Victoria, a 20-acre horticultural farm owned by the Nyokabi Cooperative had no grid access. For a decade, they relied on a noisy, expensive diesel generator for irrigation and cold storage. Batteries would fail within two years, and maintenance was a nightmare.

“We wanted solar, but most inverters required expensive battery banks we couldn’t afford upfront. We also needed high surge power for water pumps,” said cooperative chairlady Mrs. Jane Akinyi.

Their wish was answered by a 11kW solar inverter with a unique “work without battery” feature. During the day, the farm runs directly from solar panels, powering a 5HP water pump and a 5kVA second AC output for the packing shed. The inverter’s peak efficiency of 96% (PV to AC) and surge capacity of 22,000VA handles motor starts effortlessly.

“We installed only a small lithium battery for night-time lighting, but the inverter activated it automatically using PV power – no extra device needed. The parallel capability means we can add another unit next season when we expand,” Akinyi explained.

The system’s MPPT solar charger delivers up to 160A, charging the battery faster than any previous solution. With operating temperatures rated from -10°C to 55°C, the unit withstands Kisumu’s tropical heat and humidity. The cooperative now saves $500 monthly on diesel, and produce spoilage has dropped by 70%.
