New High-Efficiency, Ruggedized Inverter Supports Critical Port Electrification Project in the Netherlands
ROTTERDAM, The Netherlands – Q4 2025 – A major step forward in sustainable port operations has been achieved with the successful deployment of a new generation of compact, high-power inverters at a key container terminal in the Port of Rotterdam. The project, focused on electrifying stationary cold ironing and mobile cargo handling equipment, selected the Monet-125AC(IP65) model for its core power conversion needs, citing its exceptional combination of power density, environmental resilience, and grid-support capabilities.
Addressing a Harsh Operational Environment
Port facilities present a unique challenge for electrical equipment: constant exposure to salt air, wide temperature swings, and high humidity. The terminal's initiative to replace diesel-powered generators with a centralized battery energy storage system (BESS) and solar canopy required an inverter that could perform reliably in this setting.
"The terminal's transition to onshore power and electric machinery is a cornerstone of its decarbonization strategy," explained the project's lead engineering consultant. "We needed a power conversion solution that was not only highly efficient but could also withstand the demanding North Sea coastal climate without requiring a fully climate-controlled enclosure. The specific IP65 protection rating was a decisive factor in our selection process."
Technical Excellence Meeting Real-World Demands
The chosen Monet-125AC(IP65) inverter directly addresses the project's requirements through its documented specifications:
-
Ruggedized Design: The IP65 protection level is a critical upgrade, providing complete protection against dust ingress and low-pressure water jets from any direction. This allows for flexible installation in semi-protected areas of the terminal.
-
High Power in a Compact Format: With a Rated power of 125kW (Max. 137.5kW) packaged within dimensions of just 600*750*245mm and a weight of 69kg, the inverter offers an outstanding power-to-size ratio, saving valuable space.
-
Superior Efficiency & Grid Interaction: A maximum conversion efficiency of 98.2% ensures minimal energy loss. The wide PF adjustment range (-1 to +1) enables the system to provide essential reactive power support to the local medium-voltage grid, improving stability. A THDi of <3% guarantees clean power quality.
-
Adaptable & Resilient Performance: The Adaptive battery feature allows seamless integration with the terminal's large-scale lithium-ion BESS and supplementary solar PV. Features like 110% continuous overload capacity and three-phase independent control for unbalanced loads ensure reliable power for diverse port equipment, from ship shore connection boxes to charging points for electric straddle carriers.
-
Built for European Standards: The inverter’s wide ambient temperature range (-25~60°C with derating above 45°C) and ability to operate at 0~100% relative humidity (non-condensing) make it ideal for the temperate maritime climate. Its design and communication options (RS485/CAN/Ethernet) align with common European industrial energy management protocols.
Project Outcome and Significance
Since coming online, the inverter system has successfully managed the charge and discharge cycles of the 500kWh BESS, facilitating the shift to clean onshore power for berthed vessels and reducing the terminal's reliance on the main grid during peak periods. The robust design has required minimal maintenance despite exposure to the elements.
This deployment highlights a growing trend in Northern European industrial and logistics sectors, where stringent environmental regulations and net-zero commitments are driving investment in smart, resilient electrical infrastructure. The Monet-125AC(IP65) demonstrates how advanced power electronics can enable this transition even in some of the most operationally challenging environments.
