Vietnam’s Domestic Battery Manufacturing Takes Off with Landmark Prismatic Cell Production Facility

Project Overview

In the third quarter of 2026, a fully integrated 1GWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) prismatic cell manufacturing line commenced operations at a newly developed industrial park in Bac Ninh Province, northern Vietnam. The project, spearheaded by an international battery technology consortium with deep experience in advanced energy storage manufacturing, represents a direct response to the country‘s rapidly accelerating electric vehicle (EV) market and its ambitious renewable energy integration targets.

The production line is designed to manufacture prismatic LFP cells in three standard capacities—30Ah, 50Ah and 100Ah—utilizing a stacked electrode architecture that optimizes spatial efficiency and delivers superior thermal stability and cycle life. The facility incorporates a complete end-to-end manufacturing process, from electrode mixing and coating to stacking, electrolyte filling, formation, and final ACIR/OCV testing.

Project Location & Local Environment

Bac Ninh province was selected for its strategic advantages. As one of Vietnam‘s premier industrial hubs, the province is home to 16 industrial parks attracting nearly USD 23 billion in foreign direct investment from 39 countries and territories. The region has already established itself as a nucleus of Vietnam’s emerging battery industry cluster, with battery manufacturing facilities taking shape alongside related supply chain players in the northern corridor.

The province‘s recent infrastructure developments have further enhanced its appeal. The newly completed Dong Viet Bridge, connecting Bac Ninh directly to Hai Phong city and its deep-sea port facilities, facilitates efficient movement of raw material inputs and finished battery exports. Meanwhile, the Lao Cai–Hanoi–Hai Phong railway, spanning 419 kilometers, will provide an additional freight corridor linking Bac Ninh to major logistical arteries. Hai Phong Port, Vietnam’s premier maritime gateway, is being developed into an international logistics center with integrated seaport, industry and trade capabilities—critical for handling the specialized storage and transport requirements of lithium batteries.

Northern Vietnam‘s climate—characterized by distinct wet and dry seasons with average temperatures ranging from 17°C to 29°C—necessitated the integration of advanced environmental controls within the production facility. The 1GWh line incorporates dedicated drying units, vacuum systems, and temperature-regulated processing zones to maintain the ultra-low humidity conditions essential for LFP cell manufacturing, as specified in the equipment configuration

The facility entered full commercial production in September 2026, aligning with the completion of Vietnam‘s legal framework for EV and battery standards, which is expected to be fully implemented by the third quarter of 2026.

Key Personnel

Project Director: Mr. Jian Wei Chen, a manufacturing veteran with over 18 years of experience in lithium-ion battery production across East and Southeast Asia. Chen led the technical transfer team and supervised the installation of all 31 major equipment stations.

Operations Manager: Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh Huong, a Vietnamese engineer formerly with a leading automotive electronics supplier, brings deep expertise in lean manufacturing and local supply chain integration.

Chief Technical Advisor: Dr. Masahiro Tanaka, whose specialization in prismatic cell stacking processes and electrolyte filling technologies ensured seamless integration of the high-automation production line.

Local workforce training commenced six months prior to commissioning, with over 120 Vietnamese technicians and operators undergoing intensive certification programs. This initiative directly addressed the skilled labor shortages identified as a bottleneck in Vietnam’s industrial expansion, while leveraging the country’s large and growing industrial workforce—which numbered 53.8 million workers by late 2025.

Local Needs & Challenges

Vietnam‘s EV market has experienced explosive growth. Annual EV sales climbed from roughly 7,000 units in 2022 to nearly 175,000 in 2025. In the first four months of 2026 alone, VinFast delivered 78,458 electric cars—a 75.56 percent year-on-year increase—maintaining its position as Vietnam’s best-selling automobile brand for the 19th consecutive month. The market is projected to reach USD 3.71 billion in 2026, growing at an 18.95 percent CAGR to USD 8.84 billion by 2031.

Yet this explosive growth has exposed a critical vulnerability: supply chain dependence. Approximately 80 percent of battery raw materials and a significant share of finished cells continue to be imported. The Vietnamese government has responded by prioritizing localization. By late 2025, VinFast vehicles had achieved a localization rate of approximately 60 percent, and with stable domestic battery production, this figure is expected to rise to 80 percent.

Beyond automotive applications, Vietnam‘s power grid faces mounting strain from double-digit economic growth and rapid renewable energy expansion. The national power system’s peak capacity hit 52,225 MW in April 2026, with the northern region alone reaching 24,440 MW. Battery energy storage systems have become a cornerstone of Vietnam‘s energy strategy. Resolution 253 added mechanisms to incorporate power sources, grids, and energy storage systems into national planning. Circular 62/2025, effective January 2026, established Vietnam’s first standardized pricing framework for large-scale BESS, while EVN has targeted total storage capacity of 10,000–16,300 MW by 2030.

Stable, domestically produced LFP prismatic cells—with their proven safety characteristics, long cycle life, and cost-effectiveness—directly serve both the EV propulsion market and the utility-scale BESS applications that Vietnam urgently needs.

Government Vision & Alignment

The project aligns with multiple pillars of Vietnam‘s national development strategy:

1. Net-Zero 2050 Commitment: Vietnam has pledged to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, with electrification of transport and deployment of renewable energy storage serving as foundational pillars. The government is extending preferential tax rates for EVs through 2030, accelerating transport decarbonization.

2. Localization Mandates: By the third quarter of 2026, Vietnam will have fully implemented 28 technical standards and regulations governing charging infrastructure, stations, and traction batteries. The project directly supports the goal of raising automotive localization rates from 60 percent toward 80 percent.

3. Renewable Energy Integration: The Power Development Plan VIII (PDP8) has set a target of developing 10 to 16.3 GW of grid-connected battery storage capacity by 2030. Prime Minister directives in March 2026 emphasized energy transition and self-sufficient rooftop solar integration, with BESS identified as essential for grid stability.

4. High-Tech Investment Attraction: Vietnam is introducing special incentives for high-technology projects, including renewable energy batteries, offering preferential taxation, green credit, land use benefits, and infrastructure support.

5. Job Creation & Industrial Workforce Development: Lithium-ion battery investments in Vietnam total USD 7 billion to date, creating some 65,000 jobs. Additional investments of USD 3–9 billion could generate 22,000–65,000 new positions. The Bac Ninh facility alone employs over 300 Vietnamese workers, with further expansion planned.

Implementation Highlights

The 1GWh line integrates a comprehensive suite of manufacturing equipment spanning the entire prismatic cell production workflow: mixing equipment, double-sided slot die coating with NMP recovery, calendering, slitting, stamping, automatic stacking, ultrasonic tab welding, cover plate welding, shelling and sealing, helium leak testing, electrolyte filling under vacuum, formation cycling, laser welding, and full electrical testing.

All stages incorporate redundant quality control checkpoints, including X-ray inspection, high-vacuum oven drying, and ACIR/OCV validation. This end-to-end integration ensures consistent cell-to-cell performance and supports the demanding cycle life and safety requirements of both EV and BESS applications.

Looking Ahead

With the Bac Ninh facility now operating at nameplate capacity, the consortium has announced plans for a second phase expanding total capacity to 3 GWh by late 2028. Discussions are also underway with Vietnamese automotive OEMs and independent power producers to secure long-term offtake agreements for both EV traction batteries and grid-scale BESS deployments.

“Vietnam is not merely an assembly destination—it is becoming a true manufacturing hub for advanced battery technologies,” observed a senior industry analyst tracking Southeast Asia‘s energy transition. “Facilities like this one are laying the foundation for a resilient, localized supply chain that will power Vietnam’s electric mobility and renewable energy future for decades to come.”
